Technical Assistant, UCLA School of Law – Critical Race Studies Program
The UCLA School of Law’s Critical Race Studies Program is seeking a part-time technical consultant for its CRS Online Encyclopedia project. The CRS Program is launching a wiki encyclopedia <http://crsonline.law.ucla.edu> using the open-source Mindoutch Deki Wiki <wiki.mindtouch.com> platform, hosted on Mindtouch servers. From July 15, 2008--July 15, 2009, we seek a consultant who can:
- learn how Mindtouch Deki works (by reading online documentation, reviewing and participating in community help forums, and experimentation);
- teach and train law student editors and faculty on using Mindtouch Deki (by writing up documentation, a targeted user manual, FAQs, as well as directly training students and faculty either in person or remotely);
- recommend sensible build-out strategies for an encyclopedia with potentially thousands of entries (by analyzing the best way to arrange page hierarchies, tagging entries, titling pages, and drafting templates for new entries);
- analyze and implement the various extensions permitted by the Mindtouch Deki platform, which includes various Web 2.0 mashups (e.g., flickr integration, google calendar);
- provide limited css customization to improve the look and feel of the site;
- format and publish content provided by law student editors on a timely basis (by being able to quickly format and publish online content that is sent to them in various formats, such as Microsoft Word documents);
- provide miscellaneous technical assistance.
Funding for this assistance terminates after 1 year, so the goal is not only to format and publish content on an ongoing basis but also to build capacity within law students and faculty. The goal is to set up clearly documented practices, procedures, and instructions such that the system can grow smoothly into the future.
Payment will be $15-$20 per hour, depending on experience and ability. Our time budget is approximately 100-150 hours of assistance for the year. Applications (cover letter and resume) may be sent immediately to Prof. Saul Sarabia , Program Director.
