Encyclopedia

Welcome to the CRS Encyclopedia.  Here, you will find an online repository of information about Critical Race Theory, race, and the law intended for a wide audience including researchers, journalists, judges, academics, students, and engaged citizens.  The entries have been authored by UCLA law students or faculty.  Each entry's status -- including whether it has been edited by student editors alone or also faculty-reviewed -- is clearly noted.

Wiki + Quality Control + Transparency

In some ways, this project resembles a Wiki, which encourages decentralized production and sharing of knowledge.  But we seek also to maintain a sort of quality control more consistent with academic publication.  (Consider, e.g., Citizendium's fork away from Wikipedia.)

To get the best of both worlds, we are planning to do the following.  Although "comments" are currently left open, content -- for now -- can only be drafted by members of the UCLA School of Law community affiliated with the CRS program or enrolled in courses whose workproduct includes Encyclopedia entries.  Special submissions may also be encouraged via invitation.

These entries will be first student edited and checked, in the manner that print law review editors check articles.  In addition, on a rolling basis, the entries may be faculty-reviewed, which will add an additional guarantee of accuracy and quality.  Because we don't want this editing process to pose too much of a bottleneck, we will simply mark each entry clearly with a status flag that signals its trustworthiness:

  1. student edited:  entry checked for substantive accuracy, grammar and style, and accurate citation by students (name, class year)
  2. faculty approved: (name, date)

Navigation

You can find materials in the Encyclopedia by browsing the hierarchy to the left or typing in "key words" in the Find box, on top.  For now, we're leaving comments open, so feel free to respond to what we have offered.

Feedback

This project is in alpha stages, not even a working beta.  So any feedback or constructive criticism would be much appreciated.  Please e-mail comments to:  Prof. Jerry Kang.
