Volunteer Opportunities

Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law

The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law encourages UCLA students to
volunteer in our office. We are accepting applications for school year
and summer internships.  We also have opportunities for students to
volunteer on a few hours on Wednesday or Friday mornings throughout the
year to help with our initial client interviews.      

Student interns at the Buhai center receive:
* direct client contact
* writing experience - declarations, trial briefs, points & authorities
* excellent, one-on-one supervision from staff attorneys
* case management and case strategy experience

1. School Year Internships/ Externships: Interview and assist clients; prepare pleadings; write declarations; conduct research; interact with staff and other lawyers; attorney supervision; learn basics of family law and law office management.Minimum requirement:10 hours per week for 10 weeks.

2. Summer Internships and Fellowships: Extensive contact with clients; hands on experience with multiple interviews and appointments; high level of responsibility for handling cases; wide variety of pleading preparation including petitions, declaration writing, judgments;research; assigned writing project; strong attorney supervision and mentoring; in-depth exposure to family law practice and procedure; learn basics of law office management.Minimum requirement:full-time for 10 weeks.

3. Case Assessment and Orientation: Development of interview skills under attorney supervision; provide brief counsel and advice; learn issue spotting and client management techniques; exposure to multiple family law issues; become familiar with community resources available to low-income persons including other legal aid programs. Minimum requirement: 4 hour increments for a total of 40 hours during the school semester.

4. Volunteer: Assist clients in preparation of pleadings to file in court; work under supervision of experienced volunteers and staff; gain basic knowledge of family law. Minimum requirement:45 hours a year.

5. Required law school public service commitment: Meet your law school public servicecommitment required for graduation by working directly with a Center attorney providing help on her cases; provide needed assistance including communication with clients; file management; research and writing as requested; basic exposure to family law issues. Minimum requirement: The number ofhours established by the individual law school.

6. Law School Graduate: While awaiting bar results and wanting to apply your legal skills, volunteer at the Harriett Buhai Center; be assigned to a specific staff lawyer helping with individual case management including interviews; pleading preparation; research; learn basics of family law and law office management.Minimum requirement:45 hours during 3-month period (bar exam to bar results).
